A healing cap of implant, also referred to as a healing abutment or gingival former, can aid in encouraging both soft and hard tissue healing around an implant. Additionally, the healing cap safeguards the main portion of the implant against plaque and debris buildup. Typically, it is placed on top of the implant. The implant is designed to be slightly wider in order to shape the gum line. A healing abutment of implant can be fitted by an oral surgeon in either a one-stage or two-stage procedure.

During the one-stage procedure, both the implant and healing cap will be placed by the oral surgeon at the same time. After the bone is prepared, the implant is inserted, followed by the attachment of the healing cap. As the dental implant heals, the healing abutment will remain in place and protrude through the gum's surface. After complete integration between the implant and jawbone, the healing cap will be removed in order to access the implant. Following this, the abutment will replace the healing cap. Finally, the crown will be positioned over the abutment.

Opting to use the healing abutment can shorten the process for some individuals. With the one-stage procedure, the oral surgeon can place the healing cap without requiring a second surgery to connect the abutment. Once the gums have healed, the healing abutment will be removed, and the connecting abutment will be fitted before attaching the crown.

Healing caps should not be reused by patients, mainly because it is not feasible to recreate the surface of a new abutment even with sterilization. Additionally, sterilization can alter the initial composition of the titanium surface, reducing the effectiveness of the product. Cleaning may also damage the healing cap and implant screws, which can make it difficult to securely fix it onto an implant.
